VIGNETTES

Linda Echentille

"You are an inspiration Jilliana with your beautiful storytelling.  Colourfully describing your adventures and chance meetings as you journey the world, you engage the reader to feel as though they are walking your path."

"Jilliana, your storytelling takes me with you on your journeys. Your writing style is eloquent, articulate and intelligent. I thank you for sharing the stories that colour the fabric of your life."

"Jilliana, what a stunning and fascinating story of your journey through magical India. You bring adventure, colour and excitement into your storytelling by emotionally engaging your listener. As a fellow avert traveller and 'die hard' India fanatic for its tradition, grandeur and colour, I applaud you on your eloquent  and accurate portrayal of how Mother India uniquely entertains her selected visitors. I'm  pleased you remembered my words 'India chooses you, you do not choose India'."

“Having known Jilliana for about forty five years; there is one word that describes her above all; she is a collector. A collector of people, places, paintings, photos, stories, experiences, and anecdotes.

It almost seems as if the tales were waiting for her to arrive like a protagonist in ‘Pirandello’s six characters in search of an author’ I would not be surprised to find a Scarecrow, Tinman, or Lion at one of her parties, or even a Mad Hatter and a door mouse.

Her easy conversational style belies the effort it takes to be a Storyteller over and above being a Writer. But more than that, as an artist and designer she observes; as a linguist she listens, and as a Humanist she absorbs; a rare combination of talents.

If her feet ever touch the ground there is an autobiography waiting in the wings."

"Have read some of your vignettes and love them. I think they are full of colour - with fascinating characters and places. The social history adds so much interest to the pieces.  I loved the 'Money episode in Brazil' especially.

I'd like to hear a bit more about that fascinating leading lady, Jilliana!

I also love all your photos and think you should publish a book of photo portraits of you in your wonderfully creative clothes and jewellery. Not forgetting portraits of your international friends and of great visual interest your Faces and Places in  Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and India."

"Jilliana attended two courses in creative writing I taught at Birkbeck College, University of London, and she was an enthusiastic, highly valued student.

She is a fine linguist who has travelled widely and in her writing she often evocatively conveys the places she has visited; the different cultures and people she has met.  Besides these vivid accounts of her experiences in other countries, through her work she also powerfully, and sometimes painfully, explores her inner emotional journey.

Jilliana is a skilled writer and her vignettes are rich and varied in tone; some of them are full of her wit and humour while others are poignantly moving.  In all her work, her vibrant personality shines through, as do her great warmth and generosity which make her such an excellent workshop leader."

"Thank you very much for sending me this piece, I feel really privileged being allowed to read it. It is truly inspirational as well  as powerful and moving.  A fascinating and compelling story."

'Neko, my Habibi'

'The Cat Lady of Orgiva'

"A lady after my own heart. Great piece, Jilliana."

'Ziggy'

"I love your story, Ziggy, especially the way you structured it around the dog."

'Polish Experience' vignettes

"They are fascinating, definitely among your best! I found them very powerful and moving.  I think they are really valuable too because they describe life in Poland under the Soviet union, a time now past that it's important to record and remember."

'My Fair Lady'

"Just to say I adored this one!  You capture the vitality and charisma of June so well.  I loved the Sultan of Brunei and his three wives.  A vignette full of excellent details and the right ingredients of drama, human interest and lively observation."

'Tu and Vous'

"I love this piece, Jilliana. You draw a wonderful portrait of this couple, Henri and Marie Claire, bringing them vividly to life, as well as their home and their elegant, rather formal manners and way of life.
You describe their relationship very movingly."

'The She Man of Camden Passage'

"An intriguing piece.  You describe Janette well, really bringing her/him to life."

'Thank God for 999 #1'

I loved this one!  Definitely one of your best, Jilliana.

'Mad Collectors #2'

"I love all your vignettes about Richard Lucas. They're both very funny and also sad and moving at the same time. He's a wonderful character, really intriguing."

"Jilliana's words were mine, her thoughts were mine, her empty benches - I've sat on them myself. Watching one's life from the outside, passing too slowly and too painfully, throwing all the past in the bin, being one of the "unadjusted". I met her when it was time to, when I was about to throw again the past away and to look for another empty bench to sit on. I am listening to her, I am reading her and I am finding the strength to stand up and fight once more. Inspiration is sometimes more powerful than an act of help."

"From Cuban Vampires to Roman lovers, via the odd broken bed, Jiliana's vignettes are at once raunchy, passionate and poignant. They chart a lifetime of female adventure (across most of Europe and beyond) with all it's bittersweet moments.  She strongly believes that everyone has a story to tell and these tales of wunderlust prove that she's damm right.

An inspiration and a hoot. Wunderbar!"

Elena Prisacaru

"Going through Jilliana's writing feels like seeing a life of search, love, betrayal, spiritualism - in a nutshell- what is burning in all human beings, and yet, somehow, for so many people, there is a blank, a latent content. But even so it's all real, it's there - you only need to see how can life be, apart from your own. And you want to know more, you want to understand how is it possible that this is real - that life could be like that - that it's full of surprises and images and, especially, mystery.  Things that happen everyday are incredible, as long as you have the eyesight to notice them. But the art of expressing them in such a way - that you crave for more, that you suffer if you can't  go deeper from the surface, is what Jilliana's writing style transmits. Every time I feel there is more to it, so I seek to put the piece together in order to understand how can all this happen in one single lifetime. And even afterwards, I still keep on wondering. Maybe life it's too short, but seeing it depicted when reading, it feels that it's so much to cope with that it's overwhelming and I wonder if it's fair to live with so many memories. The past - happy and sad memories likewise, seem all together sad because of the reason that they are past. I start to question the order of the things. Who dares to say what is right and what is wrong? That is what is great about reading these vignettes. It takes you into a life journey and makes you question and doubt everything you know or believed, and this is how one can improve - by listening, by learning and understanding, but most of all, by feeling what is shared."

"This piece is extraordinary in its detail and specificity. I  loved all the colours and the sensory detail; the snapshots of characters. I know you say you 'can't' write fiction and only ever write from experience...but I think there could be the basis for a wonderful 'recent historical' novel here, if you'd 'fictionalise' the main protagonist - the narrator - and dig deeper into those family secrets you mentioned. Because under the veneer of respectability, there are always cracks.....

Thanks you for showing me - I'm amazed at how much detail you've incorporated, how clear and vivid the imagery and the sense of place/time."

"What makes a great poet or writer?
To transport the reader into the scene, into the location, into the smells, sights and sounds.
I am totally transported, maybe because I have so often been in these kind of LOVE-HATE places myself, where one just cannot make up ones mind if it is too dirty or too beautiful - too loud and life embracing - or too rowdy.
Your writing was exquisitely on spot and so realistic, I can see it when I close my eyes.
So - all I can say: ONE of your BEST poems.

"I met Jilliana (Sultana) Ranicar-Breese and her poetry in Kaş, Antalya, Turkey. When I listened to her poems, I suddenly realized that each poem made vertical headways (flow) and drove me into vertical thinking which has "the power of simplicity”. Then along with all her poems, I noticed some lateral headways (flows) as well, that made me think creatively. That was amazing… This is like a creative game as if there are many letter L’s in Jilliana’s poetry. So to say, the poems go down vertically with simplicity and this way they make you listen to the words carefully. Then Jilliana creates some lateral lines that make you think creatively and complete the letter L in her poetry. And then once again, and then once again. Or in some of her poems there is just one L. Vertical and lateral. Both ways reminded me of Prof. Edward De Bono’s theory of creativity.

Everybody who reads Jilliana's poems and think deeply, will find that special thinking pattern and enjoy it a lot."

INTERVIEWS ON YOUTUBE

Solihin Malim Thom

"Jilliana interviewed me the other day. I liked how she was prepared, having done some research prior to the interview. She had certain questions already framed on how the interview might go, but was flexible and easily reframed her goals and the outcome. She allowed the inherent rhythmicity and flow of a natural conversation to occur, albeit she did not dictate nor cut in, which often occurs in interviews. She simply suggested thoughts and topics, prior to the actual recording, to understand what she and I wanted. By and large a painless exercise and a pleasure to have had the opportunity."

"I was delighted to receive all the interview segments that you filmed at the end of last week.  Not being used to seeing my own image in colour on the screen, I was somewhat taken aback by my appearance, but that is, when all is said and done, the person that I have become over the years, and you have recorded me faithfully.  It was a great pleasure to meet and to talk with you.

I do hope that you will continue to provide a window into the lives of us peculiar people in the future, so that, even coming across your work by chance, people will hear our stories and find them amusing.

Who knows, you may find that there are links between them which you yourself could weave into a fascinating narrative."

"Interviewing people and drawing them out to tell their story is an art. Jilliana Ranicar-Breese has a natural talent for this while making interesting interjections that are often quite amusing. Please enjoy the following:

We can all learn from expert in the craft.

Keep up the good work Jilliana. Notice how she always ends on a cliffhanger. A page turner on paper, of course."

"We were impressed by Jilliana’s  genuine interest and enthusiasm for our story. When interviewing us she quickly got to the heart of what we are about both as individuals and as an organisation. It was clear that she has prepared well. Her questions were generous and we were given the space to expand our answers to fully tell our story."

"I just wanted to express again my gratitude for your visit to the Logos Hope and how much of a pleasure it was to show you around our floating home. I myself have not been able to watch the videos on YouTube yet due to the speed of the internet onboard the ship. However a number of friends and family members have watched them and commented on how interesting and entertaining they have found the interview.

Once again thank you for your visit and taking an interest in the service we do in the countries we visit here on the Logos Hope"

“That was a really fun interview. Jilliana, curious and professional, asked questions in such a way that I found myself talking of memories that I never thought would appear in words, and making connections where there previously were none in my mind. She has a generous manner when interviewing, and I would say brings out the best in people.”

"The Athos interviews are the latest in the eclectic series of interviews by Jilliana. In these triumvirate of ten-minute talks, she has surpassed herself, not only in the subject matter, being the Holy Mountain of Athos, but in her choice of interviewee. This is none other that Mr Charles Devus, poet, novelist, artist, musician, broadcaster and mystic.

"I have to voice something extremely serious and very deeply felt. I have never seen you - or heard you express yourself BETTER and more eloquently than in this TALK ACTION FOR HAPPINESS.

I am EXCEPTIONALLY proud of you and find it totally brave of you to be who you are TODAY and what you have managed to create yourself into. I applaud you for your courage. I do not know if I would ever have quite the courage to bare my darkest hours, my pained soul so openly to the world, as you have done. BRAVO!

You have found your life, or should I better say "your place in life" once again on YOUR terms...your happiness, your voice, your path. I am so - so - so proud of you. Might I say I loved the green you wore - undoubtedly my most favourite color on you.

Proudly I say today, you have risen from the GREY ashes like a Phoenix... and have become a COLORFUL creature, as has your soul and spirit.

Welcome to happiness. Welcome to life. Welcome to YOU being YOU.

Well done! Well done, Jilliana!"
