"Interviewing people and drawing them out to tell their story is an art. Jilliana Ranicar-Breese has a natural talent for this while making interesting interjections that are often quite amusing. Please enjoy the following:
We can all learn from expert in the craft.
Keep up the good work Jilliana. Notice how she always ends on a cliffhanger. A page turner on paper, of course."

"You are an inspiration Jilliana with your beautiful storytelling. Colourfully describing your adventures and chance meetings as you journey the world, you engage the reader to feel as though they are walking your path."
"Jilliana, your storytelling takes me with you on your journeys. Your writing style is eloquent, articulate and intelligent. I thank you for sharing the stories that colour the fabric of your life."
"Jilliana, what a stunning and fascinating story of your journey through magical India. You bring adventure, colour and excitement into your storytelling by emotionally engaging your listener. As a fellow avert traveller and 'die hard' India fanatic for its tradition, grandeur and colour, I applaud you on your eloquent and accurate portrayal of how Mother India uniquely entertains her selected visitors. I'm pleased you remembered my words 'India chooses you, you do not choose India'."

“Having known Jilliana for about forty five years; there is one word that describes her above all; she is a collector. A collector of people, places, paintings, photos, stories, experiences, and anecdotes.
It almost seems as if the tales were waiting for her to arrive like a protagonist in ‘Pirandello’s six characters in search of an author’ I would not be surprised to find a Scarecrow, Tinman, or Lion at one of her parties, or even a Mad Hatter and a door mouse.
Her easy conversational style belies the effort it takes to be a Storyteller over and above being a Writer. But more than that, as an artist and designer she observes; as a linguist she listens, and as a Humanist she absorbs; a rare combination of talents.
If her feet ever touch the ground there is an autobiography waiting in the wings."

"Jilliana is a very interesting writer She writes about her experiences using the flavour of words from the country she is describing. She has a flair for characterisation and leaves you wanting to know more about her characters like every good writer should . She has produced exciting radio shows and has a voice suitable for broadcasting. She has worked well in a team setting. I look forward to her latest work."

"Jilliana attended two courses in creative writing I taught at Birkbeck College, University of London, and she was an enthusiastic, highly valued student.
She is a fine linguist who has travelled widely and in her writing she often evocatively conveys the places she has visited; the different cultures and people she has met. Besides these vivid accounts of her experiences in other countries, through her work she also powerfully, and sometimes painfully, explores her inner emotional journey.
Jilliana is a skilled writer and her vignettes are rich and varied in tone; some of them are full of her wit and humour while others are poignantly moving. In all her work, her vibrant personality shines through, as do her great warmth and generosity which make her such an excellent workshop leader."

"Jilliana's words were mine, her thoughts were mine, her empty benches - I've sat on them myself. Watching one's life from the outside, passing too slowly and too painfully, throwing all the past in the bin, being one of the "unadjusted". I met her when it was time to, when I was about to throw again the past away and to look for another empty bench to sit on. I am listening to her, I am reading her and I am finding the strength to stand up and fight once more. Inspiration is sometimes more powerful than an act of help."

"From Cuban Vampires to Roman lovers, via the odd broken bed, Jiliana's vignettes are at once raunchy, passionate and poignant. They chart a lifetime of female adventure (across most of Europe and beyond) with all it's bittersweet moments. She strongly believes that everyone has a story to tell and these tales of wunderlust prove that she's damm right.
An inspiration and a hoot. Wunderbar!"

"Going through Jilliana's writing feels like seeing a life of search, love, betrayal, spiritualism - in a nutshell- what is burning in all human beings, and yet, somehow, for so many people, there is a blank, a latent content. But even so it's all real, it's there - you only need to see how can life be, apart from your own. And you want to know more, you want to understand how is it possible that this is real - that life could be like that - that it's full of surprises and images and, especially, mystery. Things that happen everyday are incredible, as long as you have the eyesight to notice them. But the art of expressing them in such a way - that you crave for more, that you suffer if you can't go deeper from the surface, is what Jilliana's writing style transmits. Every time I feel there is more to it, so I seek to put the piece together in order to understand how can all this happen in one single lifetime. And even afterwards, I still keep on wondering. Maybe life it's too short, but seeing it depicted when reading, it feels that it's so much to cope with that it's overwhelming and I wonder if it's fair to live with so many memories. The past - happy and sad memories likewise, seem all together sad because of the reason that they are past. I start to question the order of the things. Who dares to say what is right and what is wrong? That is what is great about reading these vignettes. It takes you into a life journey and makes you question and doubt everything you know or believed, and this is how one can improve - by listening, by learning and understanding, but most of all, by feeling what is shared."

“This is truly an interesting and intriguing tale! Thank you for sending it. It does indeed seem as if God is sending these Gospel-loving people your way! You are also such a friendly and welcoming person that others seem to feel invited to have a chat with you! I guess it begs the question, ‘What does it all mean to you? Is there a message you are taking away from all these “accidental” meetings??’ Something to ponder I would think....

"This is delightful!! I usually like to offer some constructive criticism, but I can't think of any! It is a charming tale - great opening line! - It is paced well, mixing personal and social history to great effect. There is a lovey timing to the piece, effortlessly readable and quite epic in the span of topics covered. It's a great story and I wouldn't change a word. I can see why you are moving away from fiction when your facts are so interesting."

"I met Jilliana (Sultana) Ranicar-Breese and her poetry in Kaş, Antalya, Turkey. When I listened to her poems, I suddenly realized that each poem made vertical headways (flow) and drove me into vertical thinking which has "the power of simplicity”. Then along with all her poems, I noticed some lateral headways (flows) as well, that made me think creatively. That was amazing… This is like a creative game as if there are many letter L’s in Jilliana’s poetry. So to say, the poems go down vertically with simplicity and this way they make you listen to the words carefully. Then Jilliana creates some lateral lines that make you think creatively and complete the letter L in her poetry. And then once again, and then once again. Or in some of her poems there is just one L. Vertical and lateral. Both ways reminded me of Prof. Edward De Bono’s theory of creativity.
Everybody who reads Jilliana's poems and think deeply, will find that special thinking pattern and enjoy it a lot."

WORKSHOPS/LIFE WRITING
Tony Bell
"Jilliana held a workshop on autobiographical writing, which was attended by some members of the GRIT charity from Newhaven. The first exercise Juliana set was to write about a turning point in our lives, the second one a missed opportunity, or something we regretted in our life, and the third one was to write about a piece of music which was meaningful to us.
Despite there being a large group of people in attendance, some of whom had never been to the Hatchery Writers before, people courageously wrote about the triumphs and disasters of their lives, and bravely read out their writing to the group, sometimes through tears. I found this honesty and bravery extremely inspiring, and chose to share some things about my life which I haven’t shared with close friends.
I felt it was a cathartic and healing experience for many people, and a reminder that, despite our superficial differences, we are all strikingly similar beneath our masks, having common needs for love and connection to others, and similar pains and sorrows of rejection, betrayal and loss. It was a powerful example of how sharing our stories can unite us, when this is done in an atmosphere of trust and respect.
I felt that friendships could easily have sprung up between many of the participants, and I wonder what would happen if the same group of people were to meet to share their life stories on a regular basis. Sometimes we hide parts of ourselves from the people we feel closest to, for fear of being hurt, or not being accepted. It is sometimes easier to share these feelings with strangers, who do not know us, do not judge us, and place no expectations upon us. Perhaps the freedom to express ourselves honestly in a group which meets regularly would spill over into the rest of our lives, breaking down the barriers to communication which have formed with others. Words have incredible power to heal, to connect us to others, and to re-connect us to ourselves, when they come from the heart."
Crispin Ellison
"I was very moved by the courage of those present, especially the younger ones, in being open about their lives and managing to read out their heartfelt contributions. Praise to Jilliana for choosing questions for the workshop that would bring out such responses and possibly lead on to further writing about their lives and experiences."
"I am enjoying the opportunity to expand my writing within a range of interesting topics. It is enabling me to connect the whole process of writing." Chris, Lewes, Sussex.
"Very rewarding. Felt wonderful connecting with women of words. Collective consciousness at its best." Karen Antoni, Actress and Storyteller, Brighton, Sussex.
"You never know what's going to come out in writing - your own as well as the other participants' - during the sessions - always interesting and illuminating." Corinne Attwood, Writer & Travel Consultant/Guide, Brighton, Sussex.
"I simply adore Jilliana's classes and her wonderful company. I feel stimulated, challenged and it is thought-provoking. It has re-opened many memories , quite an amazing journey of re-discovery of myself. There is much to learn about others' experiences, too. A most congenial setting, the class is relaxed and full of positive energy. I always come away with a big smile on my face!" Christina Galustian, Brighton, Sussex.
